Following a nationwide search, Mike Tavares joins the Little Caps to take over the talented and accomplished 16U squad. Last season, Tavares was Player Development Director with the New Jersey Titans of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). He was specifically responsible for skating and skill development, as well as video and practice support.
“I’m excited to get this season underway,” says Tavares. “the Little Caps have a great program and I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with a great group of players and coaches.”
Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Tavares played his junior hockey with the Northern Cyclones of the Atlantic Junior Hockey League (AJHL). After the Cyclones, he attended and graduated from Merrimack College with a major in sports management in 2013. After graduating he was invited to camp with the Huntsville Havoc of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL).
After leaving Huntsville, he focused his career on coaching, first joining up with Paul Vincent’s prestigious Dynamic Skating, where he served as a Director from 2010-2012. This role took him throughout the junior and college ranks of the northeast region. After Paul Vincent retired, Tavares stayed on and continued to work with Dynamic Skating all the way to 2018 where he was a Lead Director.
Concurrently, Tavares worked with a few prestigious programs in the region; Tavares worked with the Middlesex Islanders as an assistant coach for their U14 program for three seasons. Additionally, he worked with two local high school teams (Central Catholic and Malden Catholic) as a skills coach and an evaluator. With his help, Malden Catholic went on to win the ‘Super 8 Championship’ in five of his six seasons.
In 2016, Tavares accepted a position with Curry College (NCAA D-III), serving as Assistant Coach and Player Development Coach. His responsibilities included breaking down game video and creating development plans for his players.
Players with whom Tavares has worked include Jack Eichel (BUF), Jimmy Vesey (BUF), Cam Dineen (ARI), Connor Clifton (BOS), Evan Rodrigues (PIT), Shayne Gostisbehere (PHI), Wayne Simpson (ERC Ingolstadt), Mike Collins (ERC Ingolstadt), Hampus Gustafsson (Rogle), and Oliver Wahlstrom (NYI).
“We wanted to find a passionate, knowledgeable, motivated coach for this 16u squad,” says Hockey Director Matt Thomas. “We’ve found that and more with Mike. With his experience in junior and college hockey, he’s the perfect resource to help our players continue their development into those leagues.”
