  U16 National earns another Sweep!

October 24-25

The Washington Little Caps U16 National team swept the Mercer Chiefs to take four points in the AYHL.  In the first game on Saturday night, the Little Caps were initially caught napping as Mercer scored two early goals in the first 1:01 of the game.  However, Coach Plocki called a timeout and settled his troops.  The team responded and never let Mercer score again, despite a 5 minute extended power play opportunity later in the game.  Peyton Nash started the comeback with a power play goal just a few minutes after the timeout.  He converted on a beautiful back handed snipe to the dismay of the Mercer goalie.  The power play continued to hum as David Leitzel scored with just a few seconds left in the first period to tie the game 2-2.  Jack Good then broke the truce early in the third period with his first AYHL goal to take the lead for the Little Caps.  Leitzel added an insurance goal, and his second of the game, just a few minutes later.  The 4-2 lead would last as Kyle Henderson held on for the win.

On Sunday morning, the Little Caps started the scoring early with an unassisted goal from Matthew Jahn less than two minutes into the game.  The precarious one goal lead held until mercer tied it up early in the second period.  Trent DeNuccio responded a few minutes later with a laser shot from the slot.  The power play was clicking again as Cade Groton buried an assist from DeNuccio to take the 3-1 lead.  Only 19 seconds later, DeNuccio struck again on the power play.  He ended with 2G and 1A while Groton had 1G and 2A.  Jacob Goble would add an even strength tally to make it a 5-1 game.  Mercer snuck a late one in later in the third period for the 5-2 final.  With several players on injured reserve and others unavailable, the team’s ability to play together and get the two league wins and four points was a huge testimony to their character as a team.
